Shooty and the Catfish - Episode 1
A downloadable game for Windows
Welcome to the world of Nimbin, a world full of strange characters and even stranger characters. Shooty and Zaat are a team dedicated to solving mysterious monster mysteries, for a price of course, as much as they love what they do they cant do it just for the love ya know. In todays episode a call comes in from a mushroom mining town called Grit where strange things are definitely afoot!
Shooty and the Catfish is an episodic series with 5 episodes in total planned, each of these episodes building on the mechanics and story as they go. With a Game Boy Color inspired aesthetic and an original EDM soundtrack by Jim Hort and a unique resource management based combat system, I hope you enjoy this first entry into this strange new series.

Great game! The graphics are well done and stylish. The story is funny and well paced.
Thank you, I am hoping to be able to get back into game development towards the end of the year, start making more little games like this.
Will there be a gba digital download version?
This game was made in RPG maker and not GBStudio so unfortunately it's limited to PC.
I hope I can speak Chinese.
Sadly the game doesn't work on OS Catalina...
I seem to remember it working in testing, I will have to go back and look. :/
great game! the battling was fun and had great presentation. pixel art is fantastic; really cool, unique characters and creatures. only thing i didnt care for was the dialogue; it felt callous and written for shock value. but it did push the game's uniqueness and was hard to forget. i wouldnt want it changed, even if it wasnt my jam. i look forward to checking out episode 2
Thanks for checking out my game! You can actually save yourself some time and skip straight to Shooty and the Catfish: Fully Reloaded which has remakes of both episodes 1 and 2 as well as 3 completely new episodes!
Wow, this game was tight! The characters were charming, the dialogue was very well thought out and witty, and the presentation was neat. Consider me ready for Episode 2! My only complaint with the game is that there were too many healing stations, I ended up never using green herbs because there was one always easily accessible. But besides that, great game, can't wait to see what comes next!
Hello Tom, thanks for playing and for the kind words!
The game is actually fully complete if you play "Shooty and the Catfish: Fully Reloaded". That version contains remakes of Episodes 1 and 2 with overhauled visuals as well as 3 additional episodes.
There are still a lot of healing stations in the final game but some of the late-game weapons are pretty expensive so you can always sell the herbs to buy ammo. ;)
Hello! Enjoyed the game, like the overall presentation and the soundtrack was killer. One thing I'd reccomend is maybe try to have various starting points for the song when starting a battle, as most fights were very quick so I did not hear much of the track many times. Just an idea for you though -- thanks for the game!
Thank you very much for playing! Im glad you enjoyed it and I hope you get to experience the full version when it releases later this year. It will have a lot of improvements.
Your sound fix is a really good idea, I wonder if there is a way of doing it in RPGMV... I will have to investigate!
I'm not a developer so take this with a grain of salt; but could you potentially use different files of the same track that just start at different points? And have it randomly choose the different start points as you enter the battle.
Not to mean disrespect I'm very new to indie community stuff so I don't know proper etiquette :P
Hmm... that might be possible, but then I would also have to make each version of that track loop properly as well. I will look into it!
wow, "shooty and the catfish"? somehow related to "Hooty and the blowfish"??
You got me, I just really liked the way the words sounded together. Ha ha.
Haha, the title by itself is funny, let away the game! It's super!
Thanks! I am really glad you enjoyed it!
simple gameplay, but the presentation really elevates it beyond! loved the battle animations (the shoot one is great) and the general style. dialogue was crass af but very funny. i noticed a few typos (mostly you seem to have trouble with your/you're) but overall very polished game. nice job :D
Thank you kindly good sir! I only ever strived to have simple gameplay, im much more interested in using the turn based RPG system for delivering gags than I am making something deep, I dont think I have enough experience with the genre to attempt something like that. I think Episode 2 has less typos generally but yeah, spelling isnt exactly my strong suite ha ha. Thanks for checking it out, I hope you try Episode 2 as well!
Ohh boy, i LOVE this style. Keep it on!
Hey thanks! You wont have to wait long for more of it!
i'm looking forward to see more!
You can check out my last game, "Eläimet", if you like :)
From RPG Maker Game Reviews:
Score: 58/100
Concept
You play Shooty (because he likes to shoot things) and the catfish Zaat, a sort of adventuring duo hired to do odd jobs no one else wants to do. Your boss, Slim Grim the floating skull, sends you to check out what’s going in the mines in the next town over.
The Score
Story: 3/10
I like the premise of being hired problem-solvers, and there is a mystery as to what’s going on in the mines, but it failed to hook me. There are also a lot of NPCs you can talk to that don’t add anything to the story. They’re humorous, but after talking to a few of them and not learning anything new, I grew tired of the inconsequential conversations.
Characters: 10/10
Each of the characters has their own personality and is very recognizably different from the others.
Writing: 5/10
The writing is fairly decent and humorous, but there are quite a few typos.
Mapping: 5/10
I like the unique tileset the developer used, but it seems rather limited. Every interior scene has a lot of similarities. It also seemed odd that the NPCs didn’t walk around on the map.
Art: 10/10
This is the high point of the game. While I’m not a fan of the style, everything looks very unique, and each character is custom-designed.
Creative Game Design: 3/10
Most of the creativity here is in the art style. I do like that the battle system includes a skill called Diss and that it actually does damage instead of simply acting as a debuff. Who says words can’t hurt you?
Gameplay: 3/10
I enjoyed finding new gear and gaining new skills, but other than that, exploration and battle didn’t really motivate me to keep playing. The battles, boiled down beyond what the skills were named, weren’t any different than most RPG Maker games, and there was never a danger of me losing a battle, so I didn’t feel challenged in any way.
Technical: 8/10
The game runs well but doesn’t stand out as doing anything exceptional in this field. It would be good to see the game use a custom icon rather than the RPG Maker MV default.
Music: 6/10
There’s a blend of music in the game, from techno to mysterious ambiance. There are some screens, however, that don’t have any music at all, which left me feeling like something was missing.
Sound: 5/10
There aren’t many sounds in the game, and what’ s there isn’t anything special. There are also some sounds that don’t match the action they accompany. For instance, a character vomits in the bar, but the sound is pleasant, like you just opened a treasure chest or something.
Recommendation
I realize this review is coming off on the negative side, but that doesn’t mean this is a bad game. If you’re a fan of the art style and lean more toward casual gaming with a fair dose of humor, I would encourage you to give Shooty and the Catfish a try.
Totally unfair grades! This game is 100/100! This is so much better than the commercial crap that I find in Steam and Playstation stores!
I loved the game! I found only one bug and described it when rating this piece of art 5 stars. Did you find the bug I mentioned?
I am glad you enjoyed your experience! For some reason I havent received any notifications to go along with any ratings and I havent been able to work out how to check comments associated with them. :(
Ok. I will write it here too, then. I loved the Earthbound and Doom referencies. I played with gamepad. When I pressed 'B' to leave menu, sometimes game glitches. During these glitches, if I keep pressing 'B' to leave, game eventually crashes. It happened 3 times. Generally when I was giving green herb to my characters, and pressing 'B' to return to the game. That was the only bug I found. Fortunately, I always save between fights. So, I didn't loose too much time between crashes. But, hey... You should launch this game on Steam as it is... and keep on releasing the chapters from time to time. It already looks very professional. Congratulations on your RPG.
Thank you for letting me know! Unfortunately its not something I have been able to replicate on my end with my xbox one controller BUT its hopefully something that will get fixed with the next update which will be exported using a more recent version of RPGM MV and contain a few other small bug fixes and tweaks that have been brought to my attention. Im sorry that its something you had to deal with during your experience with the game.
As for Steam, it is something I had thought about but I am not a fan of the platforms current business practices so I am going to wait on it a bit. Perhaps at a later date. :)
Hi, first of all, I FREAKING LOVED the game. Thanks for advising it to me :)) It’s quite silly, absurd, strange with weeeeeeeird sometimes jokes, but enjoyable xD Also it reminded me of all those old times where I played such RPG games with battles and fighting bosses on my old mobile phone :) Also WHY YOU decided to end Flatwoods story so bloody and gruesome?!!!! It was such a cute and nice little story xD You EVIL!!!!! xD
And now I wanna say something about the bugs I noticed along the way. First of all in Mac version when you open options and then press Esc game just gives you black screen of Death xD And you can then only close the game and restarted once again. Another thing happened with me after I went into the mines. When I began to use any attack from Shooty I got «0» points for quite a while o_O Is it me or there is some bug there? AND the last question is about «save». Is this feature actually working now or it’s still in a progress? Cause I couldn’t find how to use it.
And in conclusion I just want once again to thank you for Episode 1, I had a nice 1,5 hour playing it :) All the nostalgia FEEEEEELINGS xD Though WHY HAVEN’T you included some scenes from your trailer like right into the game? It would be so AWESOME!!!!! At least at the end, as it was in Flatwoods. ps CAN’T WAIT FOR EPISODE 2!!!!!!!!! ^_^
I am so glad you enjoyed my little game, I just finished watching your first video and it was a lot of fun!
I did a lot of testing of the mac version I uploaded at home and didn't run into any of the issues you mentioned, I have however had a few people come to me to tell me the saving wasnt working on PC (along with a couple of other bugs) and it turned out they hadnt unzipped the game before they started to play it. I couldnt tell from your video if that was the case, especially since I cant read russian ha ha.
Thank you again for checking out my title and for leaving me some feedback, I hope the wait for episode 2 isnt too long and I look forward to checking out the remaining videos!
Hehehe, I'm happy to hear you think so ^_^
hahaha, well what you're gonna do and no, I unzipped it :) Though I have MacBook, not a iMac or smth like that :) And maybe it's just my notebook. Well... it happens xD
ah, you're being too kind for my own good :) And you're welcome ^_^
